Built between 1968 and 1982 according to the modernist urban plan known as the Split Development Model, the neighbourhood was conceived by urban planners and architects as a self-sufficient urban organism, developed under the ideological framework of Tito’s socialist Yugoslavia. From the outset, Split 3 was designed in close dialogue with the Mediterranean landscape and the natural topography of the site. Its architecture already possessed an organic rhythm shaped by terraces, pedestrian routes and open spaces woven into the terrain. Over time, vegetation, climate and the everyday practices of its residents have further transformed this relationship. Rather than erasing the original vision, they have softened and extended it, blurring the boundaries between architecture and landscape. The series explores how nature and community have influenced the evolution of Split 3’s founding urban ideas. Today, architecture no longer appears as an object set within nature, but as an integral part of a living landscape. <img width="9045" height="7236" width_o="9045" height_o="7236" novel “Brave New World.” SOMA is a tool of social control, a drug that quells all traces of sentiments. Any individual who dares to doubt the order established by the totalitarian authority is relegated to a desert island. In the novel, the sensitive and highly intelligent protagonist Bernard Max is exiled for these very reasons. Through SOMA, I sought to expand upon Huxley’s fairly limited description of Bernard’s voyage of exile, setting its visual narrative against the backdrop of brutalist architecture. On the one hand, its futurist mien is an ideal fit to the story playing out in the distant future. On the other, it reflects similar notions of the utopian social ideals that are at the heart of brutalist urbanist concept as a characteristic component of every totalitarian system. In both instances, a utopia ultimately evolves into a dystopia – sooner or later. Started in 2013 and still ongoing, this photographic project explores Brutalist architecture through a series of interconnected images. Each photograph is composed to flow into the next, merging distinct architectural forms into a cohesive geometric whole. In SOMA, architecture is what paves the physical path that Bernard is forced to take, yet it also endows a sense of rhythm to his subsequent intellectual evolution. In the novel, the sensitive and highly intelligent protagonist Bernard Max is exiled for these very reasons. Through SOMA, I sought to expand upon Huxley’s fairly limited description of Bernard’s voyage of exile, setting its visual narrative against the backdrop of brutalist architecture. On the one hand, its futurist mien is an ideal fit to the story playing out in the distant future. On the other, it reflects similar notions of the utopian social ideals that are at the heart of brutalist urbanist concept as a characteristic component of every totalitarian system. In both instances, a utopia ultimately evolves into a dystopia – sooner or later. Started in 2013 and still ongoing, this photographic project explores Brutalist architecture through a series of interconnected images. Each photograph is composed to flow into the next, merging distinct architectural forms into a cohesive geometric whole.&nbsp; In SOMA, architecture is what paves the physical path that Bernard is forced to take, yet it also endows a sense of rhythm to his subsequent intellectual evolution.
